Twitter was created on 21st March 2006 with the first tweet coming from Jack Dorsey;however, it was made public in July of the same year. Its inception is credited to a brainstorming session by members of the podcasting company Odeo during one of their meetings. Afterwards, twitter the number 2 social platform all over the world, was born. However, over the years the founders of twitter have maintained that its path was not as smooth as it seemed and even they never understood what twitter really was (or currently is). Their own strategic steps have led them to stumble upon different fields that they never knew could be actualized by twitter. Here are 5 facts that are hardly known about how twitter came into being;
No clear path
Well, for a company to shake up the world in 5 years, its initial conceptual idea did not have a much clear path about what twitter was going to be. It was caught up in between a micro blogging site and social media platform and it was hard to define. However, what stood out was the fact that it was meant to send short character messages to a large audience in as little time as possible enabling people to communicate in real time, on a feed.
Friend or follower?
Twitter initially had a problem with its terminology on their site. Just like it still might confuse some people now, its terminology confused its engineers in the start-up days and was constantly being revised until it settled on the terminology that is currently being used.
The 140 character limit
Well most people term the140 character limit twitter cool because it allows one to put out their thoughts in the shortest wording possible. However, twitter would have settled for 150 characters or 160 characters, so why did they choose 140?
At the time when twitter was launching, there were no smart phones and most people were paying per SMS text. The common SMS limit by the carriers was 160 words and if you exceeded it, the SMS would be broken into two amounting to more costs. Therefore twitter thought of an ingenious design to limit their characters to 140 and leave the other 20 for the colon before the message and the username. Hence the 140 character limit was born.
Family and friend usage
At its initial stages, twitter was a secret project that was only known by a select few. The main reason for this was to ensure that the application went off the radar of large companies that were suffocating Odeo at the time. Therefore only close friends and family were allowed to use the service during its beta stages.
Larry the bird
You have probably seen the bird on twitter’s logo, however many people don’t know that it has a name and what it was named after. There is still speculation as to why it was named Larry with most people giving credence to the NBA star athlete Larry, who led the Boston Celtics to two NBA wins and winning three Most Valuable Player awards.
These five facts will help illuminate how twitter and its associated marks came into existence.
