Twitter was once a glorified application that attracted minds from all walks of life due to its conciseness and ability to make anyone get into any trending conversations from wherever they are nested in. Their 140 character limit spurred people into creativity by putting their thoughts in fewer words possible. Fast forward 10 years later and the buzz that twitter came in with is nowhere to be found. More people use twitter than at its inception (obviously) but fewer people use it as much as those who earlier adopted it. So is twitter losing its popularity in this day and age of social media revolution?
- Twitter growth stalling
Twitter recently admitted that its growth is somewhat stalling and not as many people are using the platform regularly as was the case some few years ago. This ‘they termed’was as a result of other social media companies getting into the space. As a result, the developers at twitter have been adding more features in order to compete with the new entrants in this market space. However, some of their features are yet to be adopted well by its users and seemingly the consequence of doing this is much on the contrary (more users are complaining of the added features and want their twitter back).
- Twitter moderation
Twitter is a maze of people and there are as many bullies as there are people with good intent on the sight. However, twitter’s moderation of its users has been quite wanting for some time now. Most people gain more followers by becoming bullies on the site and as a result are pushing people who do not engage in active bullying away. Twitter moderation has for some time been blamed for this upsurge of bullies as many reported cases hardly get resolved in the manner that the counterparty expected. As a result more people are getting isolated because of this uncouth trend that is bound to turn the whole twitter world upside down.
Another huge factor that has led to dwindling popularity on twitter is its complexity. New people joining the site find it quite intimidating due to the many features that it contains. It also quite hard to get into someone else’s feed if you are a newbie on twitter until you obtain a large following that can re-tweet your tweets for more people to view it. This has made many people who already have twitter accounts to ignore them and instead focus on other social media accounts that seem less involving.
The interaction on twitter is starting to wane off with the constant abuses rampant on the site. Fewer interactions are being made between people nowadays and more people are likely to shun away from opening accounts on the site.
That said, it seems that twitter is indeed losing its popularity and unless it decides to do something that will create a turnaround for the company, more of its users will quickly start turning dormant.
